Planning a Trip with Baby? Don’t Forget These Essentials From Our Travel Checklist
As a new parent, you may have heard others warn against travelling with your baby when they’re too young. This advice is well-warranted because, indeed, a human being can require a lot—especially one that small. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t experience the joys of travel with your little one. In fact, if you’ve got down the essentials, it can be a truly wonderful experience!
With the holidays approaching, Mothercare Malaysia has compiled a list of must-haves for jetting (or sailing, driving) away with your baby, so you won’t second-guess yourself about forgetting anything. While some of these items may seem optional, you’ll be glad you packed them when the unexpected occurs!
Keep reading to find out what they are.
1. Lightweight Stroller
Travelling can be exhausting, especially if you have a little one constantly wrapped around your waist. That’s why it’s never a bad idea for mums and dads to bring along a lightweight stroller, especially now that many are designed to fit easily in the overhead compartment of a plane cabin. Unlike your regular stroller, travel strollers are made to fold and unfold with ease, and they’re surprisingly comfortable to carry when you’re rushing through airports or navigating crowded streets. And when it comes to tackling all kinds of terrain, the best ones even come through for when your travels take you off the beaten path.

2. Car Seat
It’s tempting to skip the car seat on holiday, given how bulky and uncompromising it can be. Nonetheless, a car seat is essential if you plan on renting a car while overseas; and for some airlines that don’t provide a bassinet for infants, a car seat is a requirement if you’ve booked a separate seat for your baby. Make sure it’s approved for air travel and meets airline and government standards. On the road, car seats keep your child secure in the event of an accident, and in the air, they offer better protection during turbulence and other situations.

3. Baby Carrier
If there’s one thing all globe-trotting parents would agree on, it’s the baby carrier. Seriously, we can’t stress this enough—even if you’ve got a stroller, a baby carrier is still a must. There will unfortunately be plenty of moments when you find yourself facing stairs, crowded areas, or rush hour, and suddenly your stroller feels like a giant burden. A baby carrier, on the other hand, is your most accessible and efficient solution for dodging chaos and moving with the kind of freedom you didn’t know you had.

4. Baby Clothes
Clothes are one of the lighter items in your baby’s luggage, but you still want to be wise about how you pack. So, what to toss in? Start by thinking about where you’re headed. For warmer places, clothes your baby already wears in Malaysia should work perfectly—breathable short-sleeved shirts, shorts, sleeveless dresses. If you’re going to colder parts of the world, then it might be time to break out the long sleeves, bodysuits, and of course those comfy sleepsuits for bedtime. Don’t forget socks to keep tiny toes warm, and maybe throw in a hat and mittens for extra cuteness and cosiness.
Our tip? When packing for a road trip with your baby, just keep it simple but smart. 1-2 outfits a day is a safe choice, plus a couple of extras in case of spills or accidents. In your backpack, make sure to pack diapers, wipes, and diaper cream in easy-to-reach pockets for quick changes, along with a portable changing mat.

5. Diapers and Wipes
As a general rule, pack disposable diapers in both your carry-on and checked baggage. You probably have a rough idea of how many your baby goes through in a day, but truth be told, babies have their own unpredictable schedules at times. Just make sure to bring enough to last until you have time to pick up more at your (not so remote) destination. And, don’t forget to pack plenty of wipes—you can never have too many of those on hand.
6. Sunscreen and Mosquito Repellent
A baby’s skin is smooth and delicate, but that also makes it more sensitive than adult skin. On vacation, you’re likely to be out in the sun more than usual, so extra care for your child’s skin is key. Sunburn is a big concern—be sure to invest in a high SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen specifically formulated for kids to shield their precious skin from UVB and UVA rays. Meanwhile, mosquito repellent, crucial for humid regions where mosquitoes run rampant, help to fend off itchy bites and protect little ones from mosquito-borne illnesses.

7. Babycare and Toiletries
Everything your baby needs daily has to fit into that suitcase. Travel-sized toiletries are convenient, but if they’re not available, you’ll need to individually transfer them into travel bottles for easier packing. Run over your child’s bathtime routine in your head and consider what you need—think baby shampoo, body wash, bubble bath, moisturiser, and even diaper cream. Don’t forget a small and soft hairbrush, too. A foldable bathtub can also make bathtime on the go much simpler and more fun!

8. Nursing Accessories
Breastfeeding on the go? Major kudos to you—you’re a total superhero! A breast pump is essential if you’re not feeding directly, and milk storage bags are ideal for saving space while keeping milk fresh. A nursing cover also comes in handy, giving you privacy if you need to feed or pump in public. And don’t overlook the breast pads—leak protection is a lifesaver on long-haul flights or sightseeing days.

9. Tableware and Cutlery
Mealtime and snacktime need their own tools, too. Whether your baby is bottle-fed or transitioning to solids, having the right tableware and cutlery is a game-changer. Besides the usual baby bottles, think about including a lightweight, spill-proof sippy cup for water or milk, plus a set of travel-friendly plates and bowls that can withstand the inevitable bumps of travel. A compact, easy-to-clean fork and spoon set will also help your baby feel like a pro at every meal, and most of these even come with built-in cases to keep them hygienic when not in use.

10. Blanket and Toys
You’ve done your research and can count on your hotel to provide bedding, but your child’s needs are a different story. Their bond with a security blanket or plush toy is irreplaceable, and leaving those comfort items behind, especially when so far away from home, could lead to a restless struggle. Make sure they feel cosy and secure by bringing along these prized possessions. Besides keeping them warm, these items also provide a sense of familiarity, helping to soothe them during bedtime or moments of discomfort while travelling. While you’re at it, consider packing in some car seat-safe toys for the journey. These little distractions can keep your baby entertained and calm during the drive, making the trip more enjoyable for everyone!
